~~ Parks Highway / Eklutna~~

From Cantwell, we traveled up to Fairbanks for a visit with friends, then headed back to

Anchorage via the Parks Highway. We spent 3 nights camping at Eklutna State

Park before coming back home again.

Although the day was clear, our view of the mountains along the Parks was dimmed by the haze of smoke from
wildfires burning near Fairbanks. This happens every summer in the dry interior.

We were aghast at the low level of the lake. A park employee told us, however, that it is always like
this in the spring. The city of Anchorage draws its drinking water from the lake during the winter months. Rain and
glacier/snow melt in the summer replenish it. For a photo of the lake at summer level, see below (photo
taken mid-August 2007).

... me on mine.

It is always too soon to leave for home.

As a lovely parting gift, the weather was clear in Seattle, for a rare look at Mt. Rainier.
